President and Head Coach, With more than 13 years experience, she is responsible for the process of designing endurance and multi-sport training programs, as well as directing the personal coaching and support to over 180 athletes. The task of developing customized training programs for all levels of athletes and to apply the most appropriate training and coaching techniques to each individual has significantly added to her experience and knowledge. Her passion for the sport and the promotion of fitness at all levels has driven her to not only keep on top of the latest training methods, but to also continuously learn from sports physiologists, physical therapists, elite athletes, renowned coaches (like Mark Allen, Rodolfo Gomez) and most importantly from each athlete she has coached. Knowing the importance of exercise and the need for physical activity amongst children and teens, she developed racelab Jr; racelab’s youth program that is devoted to promote fitness in a motivating and supportive environment while addressing the needs of each child. Born in Mexico City she moved with her husband to Germany in1990. In 1994 she came to Phoenix where she started her coaching career. By March 2001 she and her husband Gustavo became owners of racelab. Her multi-cultural mindset and ability to speak three languages fluently has helped her to develop a sensitive and open way in communicating with a diversity of people, giving her a significant advantage in her coaching career. She has individually coached more than 1000 runners and triathletes of diverse experience and ability levels... First timers to Elite. Bettina has finished marathons and triathlons, including IRONMAN. She is a certified USA Triathlon Coach level II and she holds a second degree Black Belt in traditional Japanese Karate having taught both adults and children. Gus(tavo) Warnholtz VP Strategy / Research - Coach is an Aerospace Engineer with a passion for sports performance. He has been coaching athletes since 1999. Utilizing his engineering / analytical abilities, Gus has been able to thoroughly study and simplify the complexities of human athletic training so that athletes can take advantage of advanced training methodologies. He has developed several new protocols and procedures (he has already written articles in running magazines) including a user-friendly heart rate-based training method that has proven to help optimize the time devoted to training. Gus is also leading the effort of establishing a research program within racelab that gathers, compiles, and analyzes the data produced by the hundreds of athletes that racelab trains to come up with new ways of improving the programs offered. He connects and partners with individuals and organizations that share racelab's passion for endurance sports and for a better and healthier community, such as Rodolfo Gomez Club in Mexico, and Mark Allen in the USA. Gus is always on top of the latest research on endurance sports training kinesiology and physiology, conceptualizing new ideas on how to better help athletes reach their performance goals. His deep knowledge in Aero- and and Fluid- Dynamics has helped him optimize swimming and biking evaluation and technique optimization. He is a marathoner and triathlete (competitive swimmer in college) who focuses on the analytical and technical aspects of athletic training while being passionate about racelab's ability to positively change lives.
Director Racing Team - Coach
Part of our adventure racing program, David joins racelab as one of the nation's top sprint adventure racers. His race resume includes over twenty podium finishes in events ranging from just over two hours to just under two days. In addition to more than 400 hours of personal "on the course" race experience, David has coached both elite and amateur teams to top five finishes. He was featured exclusively in this year's introduction to Outdoor Life Network's televised coverage of the Balance Bar Adventure Sprints Series and has worn the CalEco yellow leader's jersey as a member of the Epinephrine adventure racing team. When not racing, David works as a personal fitness trainer, adventure racing coach and freelance writer. In 1995, he spent five months running and biking through Eastern Africa.
Coach - Director Youth Program / Administration
Stephanie is a full time student currently working towards her Associate in Arts degree. She ran Cross Country and Track for Horizon High School and took up Triathlons in 2004. Stephanie practiced Karate for six years and taught kids for 2 of those years. In 2004 she took over the racelab jr program. She organized the Stampede at the Zoo and the racelab Run 4 Fun Series. Stephanie finished her first Ironman Triathlon in April, 2007. She also works as administrator at the racelab office.
Patrick Warnholtz Assistant Coach - Logistics Coordinator
Patrick is a student at ASU currently working towards his BS in Kiniesiology/Sports Exercise. He is a YMCA certified Personal Trainer. He works also as a bicycle mechanic. After graduating in May, 2009 he plans to train for the 2009 Ironman Arizona and then continue with graduate studies in Germany. After graduating from High School he began racing Triathlons. He trained and finished his first Ironman Triathlon in 2007. Patrick handles all Event and Coaching logistics, equipment and now assist in the coaching of racelab athletes.
Director - Coach Adventure Racing Butch has been an athlete his whole life. In the mid 80’s, he played AAA baseball for the Chicago Cubs. After several shoulder surgeries, it took him until 2001 to once again compete at a professional level, only this time he was an adventure racer. Butch started Adventure racing in 1999 and hasn’t looked back. He has achieved numerous podium finishes and National Rankings as a sprint adventure racer. Butch and his wife, Vickie, compete on the same adventure racing team and coach the racelab program along with Dave and Windy Marks. Other sports include: Boxing, Volleyball, Football, Mountain Biking, Kayaking. Vickie Nelson, Adventure Racing Coach Since the age of 7, Vickie has participated in sports at a competitive level. It began with Gymnastics, then onto track and field with her strengths in the triple jump and 400 meters. Through High School, she was part of the varsity cross country team and brought home many top finishes. Vickie has competed in marathons, 5k’s, 10k’s, duathlon’s and mountain bike races. With a love for running, she became interested in adventure racing after watching her brother Mike; compete in his first race in 1998 and watching the Eco-Challenge on TV. From that point on, her passion became adventure racing. Since 1999, she has competed in well over 50 adventure races all over the country. With her husband Butch, they have accomplished racing at an elite level, and a national ranking as a sprint adventure racing team for Team Monster Energy.

Advisor Elite triathlete, health and wellness expert No triathlete has gained the recognition or success that Mark Allen has. After competing in and losing the Ironman Triathlon Championships six times, he emerged victorious in 1989, winning the most difficult one-day sporting event in the world. His victory would be the first of six ironman wins for Allen, the last coming in 1995 at the age of 37, making him the oldest champion ever. He has also excelled at the Olympic distance, winning the sport's inaugural World Championships in 1989 in Avignon, France, by more than a minute. He went undefeated in ten trips to the Nice International Championships, and from 1988-1990, he put together a winning streak of 20 races. Over the course of his racing career (which ended in 1996), he maintained a 90% average in top-three finishes. He was named Triathlete of the Year six times by Triathlete Magazine, and in 1997, Outside Magazine tabbed him The World's Fittest Man.
High Performance Long Distance Running Advisor Born in Mexico City, Rodolfo enrolled in the Military School of Physical Education and participated in the curriculum of Specialization in Athletics taught by the International Olympic Committee. He earned a scholarship to attend the University of Texas in El Paso where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education with honors. As a long distance runner, few have achieved what Rodolfo has. Some of his awards include: 5th Place Track & Field World Cup, 10000 MTS Duesseldorf, Germany 1977. Gold Medal, Panamerican Games 10000 MTS , 1979. 5th Place Track & Field World Cup, 10000 MTS Montreal, Canada 1979. 6th Place Olympic Games 1980, Moscow. 2nd Place New York City Marathon, 1980. 1st Place Tokyo Marathon, 1981. 1st Place Athens Marathon, 1982. 1st Place Rotterdam Marathon, 1982. 1st Place Oregon Marathon, 1982. 2nd Place New York City Marathon, 1982. 1st Place Pittsburgh Marathon, 1984. 1st Place Mexico City Marathon, 1987. His best times have been 28:08 minutes in the 10K, 13:27 minutes in the 5K, and 2:09:12 in the marathon. After his career as an athlete, Rodolfo focused on becoming one of the best high performance long distance coaches in the World. Many of his athletes have won or placed in the most renowned marathons in the world. His athletes include: - Andres Espinosa, Masters Marathon World Record Holder, placed 2nd in the New York City Marathon in 1991, and was the OVERALL WINNER in 1992 and 1993. In Boston, He placed 2nd in 1991 (where he established the Mexican National Record of 2:07:19), and 3rd in 1992. - German Silva was the OVERALL WINNER of the New York City Marathon in 1994 and 1995 - Benjamín Paredes was 2nd in the New York City Marathon in 1994 right behind German Silva - Adriana Fernández was 2nd in 1998 and the OVERALL WINNER of the New York City Marathon in 1999, took 2nd place in the 1999 London Marathon where she established the Mexican National Marathon Record of 2:24:06. In 2002, she placed 2nd. - Isaac Garcia was the OVERALL WINNER of the Washington Marathon in 1992. - Martín Pitayo was the OVERALL WINNER in the 1990 Chicago Marathon. - Isidro Rico was 2nd in 1993 London Marathon.
